Activity 1

Activity 1

  1. In the world of the internet. When it comes to conspiracy theories, they tend to be on the front lines of pushing this stuff out to the world. One person who tends to make the most money and get the most attention is Alex Jones. The prodcaster of the show Infowars, a show that deliberately speaks lies to its wide range of viewers and for some reason, people keep going back to him. When it comes to Marcel Fontaine, his situation shows a true example of how bad 4chan and other conspiracy-happy protesters have lost their own minds.  The 4chan industry set out all of these pictures of Marcel accusing him of killing 17 people in Florida. A few things that make it necessary and impossible to accuse this man of such a crime. He was in Massachusetts during the time of the shooting. Not only that, but the profile of his personality doesn’t seem to fit either. Author Ed Pinkleton describes Marcels own twitter handle and how he describes himself. “

Fontaine, 25, describes themselves on Twitter as a “non-binary gay queer autistic commie that loves horror movies and metal!” They were diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum as a child and for years has struggled with anxiety and a debilitating stammer.” These characteristics don’t and location of where he was do not seem to correlate with shooting 17 people from over 1000 miles away. Pinkleton describes that his profile is what made him vulnerable and a target from the 4chan industry. Infowars later joined in on the topic and with no effort for verification they made the headline,”FLorida Shooter Was a Commie.” This Kind of accusation to a person can ruin their life especially with the conditions Maercil has already been living with his whole life.

  1. After being accused he was immediately faced with death threats across the nation. Which ended up increasing his symptoms such as panic attacks and extreme anxiety. He then had to participate in therapy to help decrease the amount of panic attacks.
  2. Lenny Pozner was a father of one of 20 children who died in the Sandy Hook, conspiracy theorists have targeted this man in a few ways. They have sent out his location multiple times causing him to move because of the crazy people who believe these kinds of things such as “ The Sandy Hook Hoax.” His defense mechanism described by Lenny was, “I was extremely naive. I believed that people were simply misinformed and that if I released proof that my child had existed, thrived, loved and was loved, and was ultimately murdered, they would understand our grief, stop harassing us, and more importantly, stop defacing photos of Noah and defaming him online.” He only wanted respect to his family and the other families affected by this horrible incident. But, the conspiracy fanatics hated that. He bel;ieves that authorities stopped looking into what goes on on the internet because of how acclimated it has become in our lives. Lenny feels that free speech should be stopped once people are spreading lies and fake conspiracies in order to increase their own profit. For example, if I was a family member of the Sandy Hook incident these claims would make me want to raise hell upon the person who would say such a thing. Even, my father was a responder to the Sandy Hook tragedy and I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so upset during that time. For someone to say that it was fake but also p[ublisize and spread it across the world. It is not right.
  3. The things that drive Dr. Offit during these times is to get the right information out to the public by using facts. So many people are drowned upon fake stories and conspiracy’s that were made for the benefit of the person who sent it out to sabotage somebody else by using this as a strategy.
  4. In the video game world, people tend to target women because they may believe that video games are no place for women to be in charge. Not only that, but different platforms have sent out channels such as 4chan about false claims of organizations that have women at the top of their organizations. She has received many threats to her and her family. She then explains how it can be difficult for women to speak out in this world.  “The cost of speaking out is so high for women, I understand why most decide not to. I’ve heard hundreds of times over the last few years women with children saying ‘I am afraid to speak up because I don’t want my children to be targeted’. That is an utterly rational position – many women are correctly scared to talk.” This explains how women are properly victimized by many males who try to overpower them with cruelty and threats in order for them to step down from their positions.

  1. Good work, Kyle. I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been for your father to respond to the Sandy Hook shooting. Anger seems the right response to people who would deny these events and target family members for harassment.
