HW- 3/9

In James O. Young article called, “Is Cultural Appropriation Ever Okay?” He expands upon his argument of the reason why different rappers of different race such as white, are failing because they display an “aesthetic difference” compared to the other artists in hip-hop. Young repeatedly refers to his reasoning for cultural appropriation off of  the artist’s style and how it is presented. In addition, aesthetic means to appreciate beauty and respecting the so called guidelines for artists in their field. Also, he often refers to other sources that have the same aesthetic reasoning as Young described. Young’s article gives us his ideas all throughout the article, he mentioned how artists need to make their music rather than take music and use it in a way that disrespects the rap culture. He adds, if your song original white rappers would be more likely to succeed in their careers. For example, if you were to be at a church and then you start playing rock music during the event. There’s a very good chance that person would not be appreciated by the members in the church. When you are in a different culture setting there are ways you should act to be respectful to the owners. If not,  just like in society in general, you won’t be liked.

In Erich Hatala Matthes article about sellouts, her main goal in this article is to describe how sellouts should be allowed because of the fans “love” and “moral connection” with the artists music. Erich helps her own argument based off of her own feelings and the opposing article to help bring out her beliefs and reasonings. She mentions “aesthetic love” for the music a lot of times. This relates to Young’s article, could the aesthetic part of the music wether that’d be the beauty or relations between the music and listener be the most popular connection from human to music? Well, if your favorite artist died when you were a teenager we’ll say. And, you have gone to this one artists music to help you get through certain situations. I believe, you would probably want to still be able to listen to their music or potential unreleased songs that are being released post death of the artist. It is an imported topic because even though people hate the fact that somebody else is making money for somebody else’s work, there are still many people who love the music and are an asset to their personal life.
