In the music culture, there have been a few topics that haven’t necessarily been completely sought out and have been determined. There have been rappers such as Eminem who has been very successful in the last two decades. He is white, but there are other white rappers/artists  or even females that have been shunned out of the rap game because of their background, ethnicity, and gender. Why? Most people believe their content crosses their line of culture appropriation. What is this line that they all seem to cross resulting in failure in their careers? Some believe they just don’t belong, others claim that they have done it to themselves. Well, I am going to tell you the top concepts and arguments from outside sources that give us an idea to why artists like Iggy Azalea, Miley Cyrus, Macklemore, and other artists have lost respect from the world of new music.

When artists get creative with their work and cross lines of their culture. A good idea to make the strategy work is to respect the new culture you are getting into within your music. Some see the way these particular artists proceed as disrespectful to their culture. People agree such as author Mathew Strohl who has explained his views as to why he believes this happens. “Iggy and Miley have become such thoroughgoing rap pariahs because they have shown wanton disrespect to the very form they borrow from.” (strohl para. 2) This explains how they have been gotten criticized and shunned because they have disrespected their own culture of their profession. Just like in real life, if you borrow something that isn’t yours, you should use it with care and respect. Normally if somebody from another background or isn’t usually in your group of some sort, tries to join, but then disrespects your foundation of your group. The new person usually will not be liked upon the existing members. These are multiple views of the same issue that is being addressed here. Another problem that occurs is, what are the factors of this appropriation line in order for other kinds of artists to be successful?

In American history, we have experienced different generations of music. From Jazz music to rock, then to genres such as hip-hop or even edm music. Throughout the history of hip-hop there have been many famous artists, most hip-hop artists happen to be black americans. Furthermore, most people know that the hip-hop culture has been the centerpiece for the african american culture here in the U.S since the beginning of the 80’s. But, it doesn’t mean that the music doesn’t spread across different ethnicities. Actually, a good portion of  different ethnicities such as white younger adults/teens frequently listen to this genre of music. This brings me in to my next point as to why we believe white artists don’t succeed as well as others. Well, author Alexus Mcleod explains his view as to why this occurs with some white rap artists, “Is hip hop “Black music”? Is it “poor people’s music”? Or both? Or is urban poverty close enough to what the popular imagination associates with Blackness that possessing such a background is seen as legitimizing?” ( para. 5) Personally, I disagree about calling the music that name but he does have a point. Most rap artists mention times of their life  that relate to such things. But, in fact, there has been some changes with this problem in rap today. Artists such as Jack Harlow, or Lil Dicky have been successful in this genre. If your asking why it’s because they make their songs their own without potentially disrespecting the rap culture because their music is purely original and some may say good quality. So, this brings me to my next idea Id like to share with you. An author named James O. Young describes his view how the respect of using another ethnicity’s built culture must come from the artists creativity in order to make people think twice about them. “The first point to make is that the distinction between making and taking tracks, if anything, an aesthetic difference. Works produced by taking are derivative. Works produced by making are original.” ( Young para. 6) He is saying that when truly making or creating everything about your song is what makes it respectable and acceptable to the so called owners of the genre. The artists, such as Miley Cyrus, and Iggy Azalea have been viewed as not good because of their actions or the music itself.
